Fashion model, budding photographer and karaoke enthusiast – Kurumi Emond lists all three to describe herself. This Tokyo-based, Japanese – Canadian model can often be spotted modeling in international editions of Elle and Vogue. You may remember her from when she visited the Buaisou Company on the island of Shikoku, to learn more about the Tory Burch x BUAISOU exclusive collection. We spent some time with her when she joined Tory at the Ginza Boutique celebration in April, where she shared what she loves about being both in front of and behind the camera as well as what inspires her.

My first modeling memory is…
My first job, shooting a fashion story of GINZA Magazine. I remember I was really nervous because I was so new, and the other models had much more experience. I just stared into the camera and then the stylist kindly said “Relax, be natural, just be yourself!” I was so grateful and lucky to have a wonderful first experience like that.

The best part about modeling is…
When a client says “you’re the perfect model for this job!”

The most challenging part about modeling is…
The most challenging but worthwhile part is finding a way to move and pose effortlessly while showing the clothes beautifully. Also, I always keep in mind to appreciate everyone’s contribution on a photoshoot. It takes the entire team to create the images so no matter how junior or new someone on the crew is, I make sure they feel appreciated.

My personal style icon is…
Elle Fanning! I think I have a “funny face” and so does she, so I feel very close to her. What I also like about her is that she is always so cute and looks stylish in any kind of clothes.

I’m most inspired to take photographs when…
I am most inspired to take a photograph when I’ve been photographed by a friend. Those are the pictures that give me inspiration to use their style as a springboard for how I will try it.

When friends from out of town visit me in Tokyo, I make sure to take them to…
Karaoke! It’s one of my favorite activities. I prefer Japanese Karaoke and usually visit one in Shibuya.

In the summer I like taking them to visit Shrine and Temple, especially when they are having Matsuri (a Japanese festival held in summer). I love that festival because of the cheerful energy and I can have many experiences that I am not able to have in Canada.

The best place to have a late-night meal is…
A Japanese Izakaya style restaurant in Nakameguro.

Something people don’t know about me is…
I am competitive and straightforward but also become nervous and sensitive quite easily! I also have many fears – I’m afraid of heights, clowns, spiders and the sea.
